Safeguarding policy

Introduction

Tokyo Play Therapy Room (TPTR), as an organisation under the umbrella of Play Therapy UK (PTUK), takes its safeguarding responsibilities seriously at all times. As an organisation supporting children’s mental health and well-being, we make it our priority to act on any behaviour that might put this at risk. TPTR defines a child as any person under the age of 18, as defined by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Safeguarding is defined as:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment.
  • Preventing impairment of children’s health and development.
  • Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

Child Protection is defined as:

  • The activity undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering or are likely to suffer significant harm.

Child Abuse is defined as:

Child abuse includes all forms of physical abuse, emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse and exploitation, neglect or negligent treatment, and the commercial or other exploitation of a child. This also includes any action that results in actual or potential harm to a child.

Child abuse may be a deliberate act or a failure to act to prevent harm. It consists of anything that individuals or institutions, intentionally or unintentionally, do that harms a child or damages their prospects for safe and healthy development into adulthood.

Safeguarding and Child Protection

Within the scope of this policy, safeguarding and child protection are defined as the responsibilities, measures, and activities undertaken to protect children from both intentional and unintentional harm.

TPTR, as an organisation, has a responsibility to act on any safeguarding concerns reported to us by a member of the public. TPTR staff have a duty to report any concerns or suspicions regarding safeguarding to the appropriate public authority.
